Now this is a topic we know is going to start a real battle. There are people who know Mickey D’s is “the place” for a burger and fries – and others who feel just as strongly that B.K. is the the #1 spot to go when you want a quick bite. We know for sure that many of you have got an opinion on this one!

Both of these places have expanded far beyond “just” burgers and fries. Now you’ll find plenty of healthy and tasty treats ideal for your on-the-go lifestyle. They are the perfect choice if you’re on the way to work, school or on the ultimate road trip.

McDonald’s started in 1940 as a barbecue restaurant that was operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald. But by 1948 they had a hamburger stand, and were using a production line to create delicious burgers that we’ve all come to know and love. Today Mickey D’s serves 68 million customers daily and is in 119 countries around the globe.

While many know its original menu items such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers and french fries, now the chain has some healthier items too. You can find a variety of salads, smoothies, oatmeal and wraps available at your local Mickey D’s.


There are 6 salads on the menu. You’ll find lots of variety, from the Premium Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken to the Premium Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken and the Premium Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken.

You can make your salad an additional healthy choice by selecting “grilled chicken” instead of “crispy chicken.”

There are 2 healthy breakfast choices, the Fruit & Maple Oatmeal and the Fruit’N Yogurt Parfait that are both under 300 calories.

Want a healthy snack for the kids or yourself while on-the-go? Pick up Apple Slices, for a 15 calorie snack. Golden Yellow Delicious Apple Slices, a sweet and healthy treat.

For many, “the” burger joint to visit is Burger King. Also called BK, this popular place has many delicious treats people enjoy on-the-go. You can find Burger King around the world, actually in 73 countries today. There are almost 13,000 Burger King restaurants worldwide, ready and waiting to serve you that next, delicious meal. There are three varieties of oatmeal at BK, including the Fruit Topped Maple Flavored QUAKER Oatmeal. All are under 300 calories.

Burger King also has apple slices for a great snack on the go. They have Red Delicious Apple slices, one serving is 30 calories and provides a full serving of fruit.

They also have Real Fruit Smoothies that include real fruit and low fat yogurt. A medium sized serving has 310 calories. There is a Pina Colada, Strawberry Banana and Tropical Mango smoothie.

There are three main dish salads on the menu (Chicken, Apple & Cranberry Garden Fresh Salad, Chicken BLT Garden Fresh Salad and Chicken Caesar Garden Fresh Salad). There is also a Garden Side Salad you can add to any meal for a healthy choice.

Wrap sandwiches are available. The average calorie count is 420 calories, including the Chicken BLT Salad Wrap. You have your choice of grilled or crispy chicken with your wrap.


Menu has Smoothies and Frozen Lemonade on the menu. Both are low calorie (under 250 calories), but will have sugar in them.

There is only one healthy choice for a dessert item, the Fruit N’Yogurt Parfait. But if you want a small treat, the Soft Baked Oatmeal Raisin Cookie has 150 calories.

Their grilled chicken sandwich meal served with a small serving of french fries or onion rings has 1,000 calories, the TENDERGRILL Chicken Sandwich Meal.

There are no healthy choices for desserts, only sundaes or pie or donuts, high calorie treats.
